Choosing the right cockerel involves considering several factors to ensure a good fit for both the bird and its new home. Prospective adopters should evaluate their living environment, the amount of space available, and whether they have other poultry. It’s important to consider the cockerel’s temperament and how it aligns with the household dynamics, especially if there are children or other animals. Experience with poultry and the ability to handle potential challenges, such as crowing and territorial behavior, should also be taken into account. Carefully assessing these aspects ensures a harmonious and rewarding relationship with new cockerels.
At Greenbank Animal Sanctuary & Poultry Rescue, we understand that circumstances sometimes necessitate the surrender of a cockerel. Our goal is to provide a safe, caring environment for all animals in need. To streamline this process and ensure the well-being of every cockerel, we require the following steps to be taken:
Steps to Surrender a Cockerel
1. Complete the Surrender Form:
We only accept applications with a fully completed surrender form. We will ask for more detailed information about the cockerel’s health, behavior, and history, when you bring him to the sanctuary. The information helps us to provide the best possible care for him.
2. Found a Cockerel?
If you have found a cockerel, please fill out the Stray Movement Order form below instead. This form ensures that we have all the necessary information about where and how the cockerel was found, as well as consent from the finder to move the animal to our sanctuary.
3. Submit the Forms:
Ensure all sections of the form are fully completed and accurate, including agreeing to the terms of the surrender and acknowledging you will have no further legal rights to the cockerel after surrender. Incomplete forms may delay the surrender process. You can...
- Use the submissions form opposite.
- Submit the forms via email to info@poultryrescue.co.uk.
4. Donation:
We politely request for a £10 donation with any cockerels submitted. This donation helps cover the initial costs of care, including food, shelter, and medical attention.
If the cockerel is accompanied by a hen of a similar breed, size, and age, the donation is waived. Having a companion can reduce stress and improve the overall well-being of the birds during their transition.
Why We Require These Steps:
Detailed Information:
The forms provide us with crucial information about the cockerel's health and behavior, which helps us to integrate the animal smoothly into our sanctuary and address any specific needs it may have. All birds are subject to a two week quarantine, assess its behaviour and condition, find a suitable companion and find suitable homes.
Financial Support:
A £10 donation assists us in providing immediate care for the cockerel. This support is vital as it helps cover expenses such as veterinary check-ups, feed, and housing improvements. The waiver for hens ensures that birds surrendered in pairs, which is often less stressful for them, are accommodated without additional financial burden on the person surrendering them.
Additionally, the donation helps to secure a compatible hen for rehoming with the cockerel. We only rehome cockerels in pairs with a compatible hen to ensure they have a companion, which significantly improves their quality of life.
By adhering to these guidelines, you help us to maintain a high standard of care for all animals at Greenbank Animal Sanctuary & Poultry Rescue.
Thank you for your cooperation and support in ensuring the well-being of the animals in our care.
