Public Statement: Mandatory Poultry Lockdown & Full Site Restrictions

The worst possible news has come to pass again. Due to the ongoing spread of avian influenza, we must now enforce a full lockdown of all poultry from Sunday, 16 February. Our sanctuary has always maintained strict biosecurity measures, including restricting incoming birds, but in response to this worsening situation, we are now extending these restrictions to all animal and people movements on and off the sanctuary.

Following the latest APHA directive, from 00:01 on Sunday, 16 February, mandatory housing measures will apply to all birds in Cheshire, Herefordshire, Lancashire, Merseyside, and Worcestershire. All bird keepers in these areas must house their birds and follow stringent biosecurity measures. If you are in a Protection Zone outside of these areas, you must also house your birds. The Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) requiring enhanced biosecurity remains in effect across all of Great Britain.

We want to be clear: previous lockdowns have been entirely unsuccessful and detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the animals. The very measures that are intended to protect them have, as seen in all past lockdowns, been completely ineffective. However, as a registered sanctuary, we must abide by the rules and ask that all adopters do the same, regardless of personal feelings or opinions on the matter.

To protect our birds and prevent any risk of contamination:

• All volunteers will be placed on temporary suspension while we navigate this period.

• Absolutely no visitors are permitted on site under any circumstances.

• Egg purchases will be handled strictly at the perimeter entrance gate, which will remain locked at all times.

We know this is frustrating, and we share your concerns. However, we must comply with the regulations to avoid further complications. We appreciate your cooperation and support during this challenging time.

The Rescue

Poultry Rescue: Our Poultry Rescue division addresses the urgent need to rescue and rehome poultry, particularly chickens and cockerels. Many of these birds are abandoned or neglected, and we provide a safe haven where they can recover and thrive.

Our Home2Roost-er Campaign: A key initiative of our Poultry Rescue is the Home2Roost-er campaign, dedicated to finding loving homes for cockerels. Due to various misconceptions and regulations, cockerels often face significant challenges in finding homes. Our campaign works tirelessly to rehome these birds, ensuring they can live safely and happily.
